Most Canadians have heard of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) by now, but many people still have questions about it. What does the plan cover, and who can get that coverage? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about this new program.
What’s Covered?
The CDCP covers a wide range of diagnostic, preventive, and restorative dental treatments and procedures for eligible Canadians. Anyone with this coverage can seek care at any Windsor dental office that accepts the CDCP to receive care at low or no cost.
The plan covers:
- Cleanings and check-ups
- X-rays
- Fluoride treatments
- Sealants
- Fillings
- Root canals
- Deep cleanings for people with periodontal disease
- Extractions
- Oral surgery
- Dentures
- Crowns
- Sedation
Orthodontics are expected to be added to this list at some point in 2025, but they are currently not covered. When they are added, they will only be covered in cases where they are medically necessary and only up to a certain amount.
Some procedures require pre-authorization from the insurer to be eligible for coverage. If you need any of these services, your dentist will help you file the necessary paperwork to get those expenses approved.
Who Is Eligible?
Right now, only certain groups of people can apply for the CDCP. These include:
- Children aged 17 or younger
- Seniors aged 65 or older
- People aged 18 to 64 with a valid Disability Tax Credit for 2023
Applicants must also have a combined family income of $90,000 or less and no dental coverage from any other insurance plan. Some provincial disability programs, including the Ontario Disability Support Program, offer dental coverage that is exempt from this rule. In cases when a person is eligible for coverage under the CDCP and another plan, the CDCP may cover fees and services that the other plan does not.
CDCP enrollment is expected to roll out to all financially eligible Canadians sometime in 2025. As of now, there is no firm date set for this development.
If you’re eligible for the program now, you can apply online on the Government of Canada’s website. It may take several months for your application to be approved and your coverage to begin.
Fees and Co-Pays
The CDCP’s fee structure depends on your total family income. Applicants with a combined family income of less than $70,000 receive coverage with no co-pays. Applicants with income between $70,000 and $90,000 will be charged a small co-pay for each procedure.
It’s important to note that no service covered by the CDCP is guaranteed to be free, even if you qualify for coverage without co-pays. Some dentists may charge additional fees beyond what the CDCP covers. Always ask your dentist for an estimate before agreeing to receive treatment so you won’t end up with a nasty surprise later.
